Bournemouth to Winchester by Train

By Winchester Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Bournemouth to Winchester needs no change. Direct trains, run by South Western Railway and CrossCountry, make four stops on the way and typically take 52 minutes; the quickest did it in 45.

Three direct trains an hour

On the weekday timetable we checked, 48 direct trains left Bournemouth between 05:12 and 22:10, every 15 to 30 minutes or so. The early morning was irregular, with eleven trains at 05:12, 05:53, 06:09, 06:30, 06:55, 07:23, 07:30, 07:53, 08:15, 08:40 and 08:54, so a commuter-hour start from Bournemouth is worth timing. From the 09:22 they settled at about 20, 45 and 57 minutes past the hour, three an hour, a pattern that held until the 19:57.

After that the evening thins out. The final four direct trains we found left at 20:21, 20:57, 21:10 and 22:10, so a late start from Bournemouth means checking which of those you are aiming for rather than turning up at the station.

The seven minutes between a typical run and the quickest come down to which train you catch, so if the time matters, check the journey length of your particular departure before choosing it.

Train or car

Driving the A31 is 40 miles and takes about 54 minutes, two minutes longer than a typical train and nine behind the quickest direct run. With trains this frequent and no change involved, the decision comes down to what you need at the other end rather than speed.

Arriving

The walk from Winchester station to the Buttercross on the High Street is about 760 metres and should take no more than ten minutes, so on one of the quicker trains Bournemouth to the centre of Winchester comes in just under the hour.
