London Waterloo to Winchester is a direct South Western Railway train. It makes two stops and takes just under an hour, with the quickest runs at 56 minutes.
This is a well-served route. On the weekday timetable we checked there were 50 departures from Waterloo, from 05:18 to 23:35. Through most of the day they came in a cluster of three each hour, at about five past, nine past and 35 past, so in the middle of the day you were never more than half an hour from the next one.
The five-past and nine-past trains leave only four minutes apart. If you just miss the first, the second is close behind, which takes the pressure off a tight dash to Waterloo.
In the evening the pattern eases to two an hour, at five and 35 past, and that continues right up to the 23:35. Even a late finish in London leaves you a train to Winchester.
From London Paddington there is a second way. A GWR train runs to Reading in 23 minutes, and a CrossCountry train takes 34 minutes from Reading to Winchester. With about six minutes to change at Reading, the whole trip is 63 minutes, only a little longer than the Waterloo train. It ran hourly, usually at 23 minutes past, from 07:20 to 21:23.
Six minutes is not much slack, so this suits people who start nearer Paddington than Waterloo rather than anyone choosing between the two. An hourly journey with a change at Basingstoke, at around 66 minutes, also turned up.
Driving the M3 is 68 miles and about 1h 40m, which is slower than either train.
From Winchester station the walk to the Buttercross on the High Street is roughly 760 metres, about ten minutes.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
