Reading to Winchester is a direct CrossCountry train. It makes two stops and takes about 34 minutes, the quickest a couple of minutes less, and needs no change.
On the weekday timetable we checked, the direct train left Reading hourly from 07:52 until 22:49, always between 49 and 54 minutes past. That is an easy slot to remember, but it also means a missed train leaves you with most of an hour to fill.
The gaps are where the Basingstoke route earns its place. Journeys with a change there took around 57 minutes and ran 19 times through the day, from 06:20 to 23:34. From 10:07 to 17:15 they left Reading between five and fifteen minutes past the hour, a quarter of an hour or so after the direct train had gone.
On typical times, that makes it the better move if you have just missed a direct train in the middle of the day: the next Basingstoke departure reaches Winchester before the following direct train would. It also covers the early morning, with departures at 06:20, 06:40 and 06:57 before the first direct train, and the late evening, with a 23:34 after the last.
Two other routings, an early one via Guildford and Woking and an afternoon one changing at Farnborough, each took around an hour and a half. There is no reason to choose them over either of the main options.
By road the trip is 37 miles via the A33 and M3 and takes just over an hour, nearly twice as long as the direct train. On a journey this short, the train is the obvious choice for anyone without a reason to drive.
At Winchester, the Buttercross on the High Street is a ten-minute walk from the station, about 760 metres.
