Southampton Central to Winchester is a short, direct hop. CrossCountry and South Western Railway trains make two stops on the way and take 17 minutes, the quickest 15, so this is a journey you can make on a whim.
On the weekday timetable we checked, 54 direct trains left Southampton Central between 04:49 and 23:00, every 15 to 30 minutes or so. For most of the day they ran on the hour, at quarter past and at half past, which gives three departures an hour through the daytime, with the longest gap being the half hour after each half-past train. Early starts are well covered too, with six departures before seven, the first of them at 04:49. One other routing turned up in the day, a 17:24 changing at Eastleigh that took about 27 minutes; with the direct 17:30 arriving first, it is not worth waiting for.
The evening thins out. After the 20:15, the remaining departures were 20:30, 20:59, 21:30 and 21:58, and finally the 23:00. Miss that last one and the only option that appeared was a 23:23 taking a train to Chandler’s Ford and a bus onward, about 1h 25m in all, five times as long as the direct train.
By road it is 13 miles via the M3 and takes about half an hour. The train is quicker, needs no parking, and with this many departures there is little reason to drive unless you are carrying something heavy.
From the station in Winchester, the Buttercross on the High Street is about 760 metres away, roughly ten minutes on foot. That walk is not far off the length of the train ride itself, so from stepping aboard at Southampton Central to standing at the Buttercross takes under half an hour.
Journey times and changes below come from the rail and bus timetables for Tuesday 1 December 2026. Weekend and holiday timetables differ, so check the day you travel.
