Winchester station on Station Hill: which side you arrive on, the walk down to the High Street, tickets, toilets, step-free access and parking.
Winchester station is on Station Hill, on higher ground north-west of the city centre, and South Western Railway runs it. It has two platforms, each with its own gated entrance, joined by a footbridge with lifts. The ticket office, the taxi rank and the forecourt are on the Platform 2 side, which is the main entrance.
Platform 2 serves trains towards Southampton and Portsmouth, so arrivals from London and Reading step off on the main-entrance side, level with the gates.
Platform 1 serves trains towards London and Reading, so arrivals from Southampton, Portsmouth and Bournemouth come in on the far side. Cross by the footbridge or the stepped subway. Platform 1 has its own gates and a ramp to the car park and the drop-off bays.
The usual way in is down Station Hill and along City Road to Jewry Street, which runs down to the High Street; the Buttercross is a short way to the left. The centre sits lower than the station, so the walk in is downhill overall and the walk back is the climb, worth allowing for with a suitcase or a pushchair. The station panel gives the walking time.
Buses are rarely needed for the centre, though Visit Winchester suggests the park and ride bus for the run from the station to the lower part of the city. National Rail’s onward travel sheet, linked from its station page, maps the nearby stops, and Winchester is a PlusBus area, so a PlusBus add-on to a train ticket covers participating local buses. Rail replacement buses leave from the Station Hill stop.
The taxi rank is at the main entrance, and the onward travel sheet says booking ahead is not normally necessary except early in the morning or late at night. Vehicle ramps cannot be deployed at the rank, and South Western Railway says there is no designated accessible taxi rank, so book a wheelchair-accessible car ahead.
The ticket office is in the ticket hall at the main entrance, with a low-level counter and an induction loop. National Rail gives its hours as 06:00 to 20:30 on weekdays, 06:00 to 19:30 on Saturdays and 07:00 to 20:30 on Sundays. Ticket machines at both entrances also issue tickets bought online for collection.
Toilets are on both platforms and close at 20:30. The accessible toilet, with baby changing, is on Platform 2 and opens with a RADAR key from the staff; there is no Changing Places toilet. A heated waiting room on Platform 2 is open from 06:00 to 21:00, both platforms have a café and snack machines, and there is no left luggage.
National Rail puts Winchester in step-free category B1: “there is step-free access to all platforms which may be accessed via long or steep ramps or via streets”. By National Rail’s definition, that access is likely to be usable by many people with reduced mobility, with ramps of up to 1:10.
Platform 2 is step-free from the forecourt, which slopes at 1:10, and its night gate has a short 1:8 ramp. Platform 1 is reached from the car park and drop-off by a 25-metre ramp at 1:18. The footbridge lifts are available 24 hours and have doors 1.1 metres wide; the road route between the platforms is 745 metres, with some narrow pavements and steep gradients.
Staff are on hand from 05:45 (06:30 on Sundays) until 23:00, and the assistance meeting point is the gateline on either side. South Western Railway takes bookings up to two hours before travel on 0800 528 2100 and says staff will do their best for anyone who has not booked; outside staffed hours the guard helps passengers on and off. Wheelchairs or mobility buggies and boarding ramps are kept at the station.
The station car park has 464 spaces, including ten accessible bays off Station Road and by the two Stockbridge Road entrances, and no electric-vehicle charge points. On 27 October 2026 South Western Railway’s station page listed £12 for a peak day, £8 off-peak (from 12:00 on weekdays) and £8 on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays, with £2 an hour from 12:00 on weekdays and all weekend through RingGo (code 2007) or ScanPay only. Charges change, so check the tariff board. Blue Badge holders park free once registered with South Western Railway.
Station Road has a drop-off and pick-up point with room for three cars and, further north, a drop-off-only stretch with room for five. For a day in the city rather than a train, the city car parks and park and ride are in the parking guide.
Each route has its own page with the day's trains, the changes and a link to times and fares.
